A: It was by invitation only and The Rolling Stones were not invited to attend. According to Woodstock: an encyclopedia of the music and art fair (pp145-6), the Rolling Stones weren't invited for two main reasons: One, the high performance fee they were getting was more than the Woodstock organizers wanted to pay. Two, the Stones' big hit at the time was "Street Fightin Man" and there was concern that their material might damage the "peace, love & understanding" nature of the concert.

The following groups were invited but canceled:
♪ Jeff Beck Group (the band broke up in July, forcing cancellation)
♪ Iron Butterfly (stuck at the airport, their manager demanded helicopters and special arrangements just for them. Were wired back and told, as impolitely as Western Union would allow, "to get lost.")
♪ Joni Mitchell (Joni's agent put her on The Dick Cavett Show instead)

The following groups declined to attend:
♪ The Beatles (John Lennon said he couldn't get them together)
♪ Led Zeppelin (got a higher paying gig elsewhere)
♪ Bob Dylan (turned it down because of his disgust with the hippies hanging around his house) ... More

Joe Cocker
Joe Cocker
Spotlight: Life magazine once called Joe Cocker "the voice of all those blind criers and crazy beggars and maimed men who summon up a strength we'll never know to bawl out their souls in the streets." The gravelly-voiced rocker is one of the few musicians who performed in both the original Woodstock in 1969 and the 25th anniversary Woodstock reunion in 1994. In performance, Cocker is known to make jumpy movements; the late comedian John Belushi capitalized on that with a wildly successful spoof on Saturday Night Live in the '70s. Happy birthday to Joe Cocker, who turns 65 today.

Three Cheers for the Catch-All King: Mezzra

SupervisorHip-hip-hooray! Hip-hip-hooray! Hip-hip-hooray! There’s no denying that WikiAnswers.com’s has a lot of dedicated contributors. But sometimes there are those who shine so brightly, they could be mistaken for royalty! One person who really, honestly and truly deserves more than three cheers is our fantabulous Mezzra. On the site since only December 2008, this force to be reckoned with has already accomplished the impossible: just under 90,000 contributions, 50 hours as a Vandal Patrol Site Guardian and winning a 2008 Honorable Mention WAmmy. All this, while simultaneously volunteering as a mentor, WIT Adult Advisor and Wikiguide. And if that doesn?t keep him busy enough, he?s also an avid Category Supervisor ? carefully watching over the dire and dangerous Catch-Alls.

What can I say? All hail Mezzra! Here?s more from the Wiki-King himself: How did you originally hear about WikiAnswers.com?.. Click here to read more
